Eccellenti i neri che risultano corposi e

Last week, I was trying to find out how to get my photo’s metadata. I had noticed that Windows could display the camera model, creation date and lots of other data on my photos, but I couldn’t remember what that data was called. I finally found what I was looking for. The term is EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format). For this post, we’ll take a look at the various 3rd party packages that give you access to this information.

My first thought was that the Python Imaging Library would have this functionality, but I hadn’t found the EXIF term yet and couldn’t find that info in PIL’s handbook without it. Fortunately, I did eventually find a way to use PIL via a stackoverflow thread. Here’s the method that it showed:

from PIL import Image
from PIL.ExifTags import TAGS

def get_exif(fn):
ret = {}
i = Image.open(fn)
info = i._getexif()
for tag, value in info.items():
decoded = TAGS.get(tag, tag)
ret[decoded] = value
return ret

This works quite well and returns a nice dictionary object. There are several fields that I found useless, such as the “MakerNote” field which looked like a lot of hexadecimal values, so you’ll probably only want to use certain pieces of data. Here’s a sample of some of the info I got back:

{'YResolution': (180, 1),
'ResolutionUnit': 2,
'Make': 'Canon',
'Flash': 16,
'DateTime': '2009:09:11 11:29:10',
'MeteringMode': 5,
'XResolution': (180, 1),
'ColorSpace': 1,
'ExifImageWidth': 3264,
'DateTimeDigitized': '2009:09:11 11:29:10',
'ApertureValue': (116, 32),
'FocalPlaneYResolution': (2448000, 169),
'CompressedBitsPerPixel': (3, 1),
'SensingMethod': 2,
'FNumber': (35, 10),
'DateTimeOriginal': '2009:09:11 11:29:10',
'FocalLength': (26000, 1000),
'FocalPlaneXResolution': (3264000, 225),
'ExifOffset': 196,
'ExifImageHeight': 2448,
'ISOSpeedRatings': 100,
'Model': 'Canon PowerShot S5 IS',
'Orientation': 1,
'ExposureTime': (1, 200),
'FileSource': '\x03',
'MaxApertureValue': (116, 32),
'ExifInteroperabilityOffset': 3346,
'FlashPixVersion': '0100',
'FocalPlaneResolutionUnit': 2,
'YCbCrPositioning': 1,
'ExifVersion': '0220'}

I don’t really know what all of those values mean, but I know I can use some of them. My purpose for wanting the data is to expand my simple Image Viewer such that it can display more info to the user about their photo.

Here are a few other libraries I found that can supposedly give access to the EXIF data:

  • Media Metadata for Python
  • EXIF.py
  • Python Exif Parser
  • A Blogger’s Exif Parser
  • pyexiv2

I tried the Python Exif Parser and it worked quite well. When I tried to install pyexiv2 on my Python 2.5 box at work, I got an error message about Python 2.6 not being found and then the installer quit. There is no mention on the pyexiv2 website that it requires a certain version of Python to work, so that was a little frustrating. Most of these modules have little or no documentation, which was also pretty frustrating. From what I can tell, EXIF.py is supposed to be used via the command line rather than as an importable module.

Anyway, back to the Python Exif Parser. It’s actually simpler to use than PIL is. Here’s all you need to do after copying the exif.py file into your Python path:

import exif
photo_path = "somePath\to\a\photo.jpg"
data = exif.parse(photo_path)

The code above returns mostly the same information that the PIL snippet does, although it uses integers instead of hex for the “MakersNote” and it has several “Tag0xa406′” fields whereas the PIL data had some numerical fields (which I excluded above). I assume they reference the same information in different ways though.

Anyway, should you find yourself wandering the web when trying to discover this information, hopefully you will stumble upon this post and it will point you in the right direction.

If you haven't stopped by The Sartorialist in a little while, you need to now. Scott is currently hosting a vintage photo contest where readers can submit vintage photos of family or even strangers at their most stylish.

Of course, I'm loving all of the classic styles, but the thing that I've found especially interesting is how much more focus I place on the wearer than on the clothes themselves. All of the subjects of the photos have a certain poise or swagger about them that matters so much more than what they're wearing. So all of those times your mom told you confidence is what matters — she was right! Although a pair of killer heels or perfectly tailored pants sure doesn't hurt.

I wish I had access to my family archives to enter, but I urge all of you guys to do so if you can. Contest rules here.

Afro-Brazilian Cinema Set to Break into the Mainstream

The Film Society of Lincoln Center's current series, “Another Spanish Cinema: Films in Catalunya 1906-2006,” screening at the Walter Reade Theater from January 27 through February 14, sheds light on a little known facet of Spanish cinema: films from the Catalan region of Spain, and its celebrated city of Barcelona. This section of Spain has contributed such great artists as Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, and Antonio Gaudi. However, its considerable contributions to world cinema as been little noted. This film series sets out to correct this situation.

Barcelona was the center of Spanish filmmaking during the silent era. However, this ended after the Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s, when the Franco regime suppressed all traces of Catalan language and culture to prevent it from breaking away from Spain. Some filmmakers, though, continued to make films that sought to resist Franco's repressive rule through radical, transgressive art. One filmmaking collective that did so was known as the “Barcelona School,” a loose constellation of writers and directors that set themselves in opposition to the more commercial films being made in Madrid. One film that came out of this movement, which screens in this series, is Jacinto Esteva Grewe and Joaquin Jorda's Dante Is Not Simply Harsh (1967). This film has definite affinities to the various “New Wave” movements occurring in Europe at the time, as well as surrealist elements reminiscent of Bunuel and Dali's Un chien andalou, and its iconic image of a bisected eye. The surrealist impulse of the film is evident in its exquisite-corpse structure, casting its central couple (Serena Vergano and Enrique Irazaqui) in different environments and backgrounds, using loose associative connections to transition from scene to scene rather than a conventional plot. The film also calls attention to itself as a film, by opening with the film crew shooting the actors. While the film often strains patience by its infatuation with its own subversive cleverness, it remains an interesting time-capsule curio. Burning streets, fashion shows, absurdist dialogue, and jarring montages abound in this film. These images circle around rather gruesome shots of eye surgery, which recall that Bunuel and Dali's earlier surrealist masterpiece.

After Franco's death in 1975, Catalan cinema began to emerge from its previous suppression, and many fascinating films resulted. Ventura Pons is perhaps Catalan cinema's most recognized and celebrated filmmaker, and two of his films screen in the series. Ocana, Intermittent Portrait (1979) is a fascinating and lively documentary portrait of the titular subject, who fled the repressive environment of Madrid to the more liberal Barcelona in order to pursue his passions for painting, acting, and cross-dressing. Ocana is interviewed in his colorful bedroom, in front of a large mirror next to his bed; the camera often pans from Ocana to his mirror image, reflecting the fact that his life revolves around his appearance, both to himself and to others. He talks about the ostracism he has experienced and his connection to other outcasts; his life is itself a form of protest against conformity and repression. “I love provoking people,” he says at one point. He also fiercely resists labels. Despite his penchant for cross-dressing, he insists he is not a transvestite; rather, he considers himself a “pure actor.” We see him parading down the street, flashing his genitals to the crowd during his impromptu street performances. He also sings and acts melodramatically in performance clips interspersed throughout the film. Ocana embodied the struggle to be respected on his own terms and to be free to live his life as he chose.

A more recent work by Pons, Anita Takes a Chance (2001), is a charming comedy about a middle-aged woman (Rosa Maria Sarda, in an energetic and funny performance) set adrift when she is unceremoniously dumped from her job as a ticket taker in an old movie house, which is being torn down to be replaced by a multiplex. Anita is considered to be too old to fit the image of this new venture. She reminisces about her dead husband and is anxious about her loneliness and her seeming lack of prospects for the future. She obsessively returns to the construction site for the multiplex, where she becomes drawn to a young bulldozer driver (Jose Coronado). She begins an affair with him, despite his being married. Through this affair, Anita is able to break out of her constricted and routine experience, finding new excitement in her life, even as she risks pain and disappointment. Humor and pathos are deftly intertwined in this film, and Anita's movie-influenced fantasies effectively convey her fascinating character.

Another celebrated Catalan filmmaker is Cesc Gay, represented in the series by In the City (2003), which follows a group of characters in Barcelona, who are connected in ways that are ultimately only grasped by the viewer. Their romantic entanglements and the hidden parts of their lives intersect with the setting of Barcelona, which also becomes a character in the story.

These and many other films in the series show the richness and variety of a previously overlooked facet of Spanish cinema, one of the world's strongest and most vibrant film industries.

Madrid is the capital and largest city in Spain. This part of the world has been occupied since before history was even written down! With such a long and rich history, Madrid is one of the most diverse and cultural cities in the world. Noted for its amazing architecture and wealth of museums as well as a great night life, Madrid is a place that you definitely want to add to your list. Still, there are so many things about the city that most tourists miss. This list of ten non-touristy spots will fill you in on the secrets of Madrid.

1. Buen Retiro Park - This magnificent 350 acre park is located at the edge of the city center, near the Prado Museum. The park is an excellent place to visit in order to see how real Spanish people relax in the sun. You can rent a boat to explore the lake, check out some of the many exhibitions of the area, or just play a pickup soccer game with some of the locals. There is a lot to do there, even if all you want to do is relax.

2. Caixa Forum - If you are a fan of art, then you will no doubt be visiting the famous Prado Museum and Reino Sofia, but if you'd also like to check out some more toned down museums, consider the Caixa Forum first. This post-modern art gallery features some excellent works that will blow your mind with their post-modern flare. The building itself will pop out at you with its strange and intriguing architecture.

3. La casa encendida - If the Caixa Forum didn't give you enough, you may want to look up la casa encendida, another interesting and little known art museum which supports local unknown artists. Both museums are free to the public so the trip will be a fun one for you and your wallet. The website for la casa is lacasaencendida.es . Click English at the top left to see the website in English.

4. La Latino - On Sunday nights, the barrios plazas are packed with the youth of Madrid making a street party (called a bottelon). Musicians begin jam sessions out of the blue as people have a good time late into the night. Enjoy exploring these barrios bars, which offer amazing tapas food and great Spanish beer. Any night of the week it can be fun, but Sunday nights are especially crazy.

5. Plaza Santa Ana - This great plaza is full of great restaurants to sample during your stay in Madrid. The food is excellent and there are often events there. It is a place where real people of Madrid come to eat every day, so if you want to experience modern Spanish life, check it out.

6. Templo de Debod - This Egyptian temple was actually removed from where it was built in the 4th century and taken to Madrid in 1971. It is an excellent place to relax, eat some street vendor food, and let the day get away from you. Only a few blocks from the Royal Palace, it may be a good spot for you to just rest and enjoy being in Madrid.

7. Calle Malasaña - Calle means “street” in Spanish and this street is a location in itself. Famous for its bars and dance clubs, this is a place you will want to visit if you're into serious partying. The clubs don't actually start rolling until about 1 AM, so keep that in mind when making plans. In Madrid, everything is a little later than you may be used to, but it is well worth the wait.

8. Atocha Train Station - This famous train station is noteworthy because the interior is full of life! I don't mean passengers walking around, but a small ecosystem of plants and animals in the center of the station. Using the natural greenhouse effect of the large open station, designer decided to put a larger garden in the center of the huge room. This is a great place to visit even if you don't have any train to catch, and perhaps especially so because you will be able to enjoy the garden as long as you'd like.

9. Caso de Campo - Known as one of the largest parks in the world at 6.6 sq miles, this amazing park is something that you may want to visit because of its great Madrid Zoo and other fun activities. There are few things more fun than a good zoo and it isn't always something visitors think of going to. Take a relaxing walk through the zoo enjoying the wildlife and then exit and explore the rest of the park. Literally a whole day could be spend enjoying the famous green space.

10. Explore the city - You're on vacation, so get out and walk around! The great thing about an old city like Madrid is every nook and cranny is stuffed with things to do and see. Just walk around, stop at interesting looking shops and cafes, and take all of the architecture in. As a city noted for its excellent architecture, Madrid will offer a lot for you to gaze at as you explore.

Madrid is an amazing place to vacation and there are so many things to do that you can easily avoid those crowded touristy spots and enjoy the real Madrid the way you should.

Vogel - Bird by BlaM4c

Jim Marshall, who spent more than a half-century capturing rock-and-roll royalty ranging from the Beatles to Ben Harper at work and in repose, has died. He was 74. Aaron Zych, a manager at the Morrison Hotel Galleries in New York City, confirmed Marshall’s death on Wednesday. Zych says Marshall had been scheduled to appear at another gallery on Wednesday night to promote his new book with celebrity photographer Timothy White and apparently died alone in his sleep in his New York City hotel room.

The San Francisco resident was best-known for his iconic images from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock in 1969. His more recent subjects included John Mayer and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. SAN FRANCISCO — Music photographer Jim Marshall, who spent more than a half-century capturing rock-and-roll legends including the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin at work and in repose, has died. He was 74.

Marshall’s death in New York City was confirmed Wednesday by Aaron Zych, a manager at the Morrison Hotel Galleries, which hosted one of the photographer’s last exhibits. Marshall also was the only photographer granted backstage access at what turned out to be the final Beatles concert, at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1966. Good timing and his rapport with musicians also helped him catch Johnny Cash memorably “flipping the bird” at a 1969 performance at San Quentin Prison.

Born in Chicago and raised in San Francisco, Marshall began his career in 1959. Getting his break via a chance shoot with John Coltrane who consented to the photographs after Marshall gave him a ride, Marshall would go on to work some of the most famous Jim Atherton, a member of the IATSE Local 695 Motion Picture Sound Recording Engineers, died Tuesday in Toledo, Ohio of natural causes. He was 70.

I waited a few hours and since Nicole didn’t do it (I know she thought about it), I thought I’d put up the sad news that rock photographer Jim Marshall has died at 74.

Hendrix, Stones, Joplin. He shot them all and so many more of the most iconic images in rock and roll, including possibly the most famous on-stage photo ever taken. See it and read more straight ahead….

Here’s my favorite Marshall shot and probably yours too. It might be the most celebrated picture of his career, and of Johnny Cash’s too. Honestly, I’d replace Ben Franklin and put this on the hundred dollar bill.

Two more. Led Zeppelin, 1970.

Beatles! Heard of ‘em?

Read more about Jim here and buy some of his work here. Please enjoy.

Top 5 Games and Gifts for PS2

Ever come across a game that just perplexes you? Black And Bruised PS2 is one of those. I have no idea why this game really exists. It is easily one of the most mindless, useless, time-wasting game that I've ever seen. What are half-naked women doing trying to box against 400 lbs of pure muscle? Nothing, it's just one of the stupidities of the game. Okay, maybe, just maybe there are some good things about Black And Bruised. For example, the game actually has a story behind each of the boxers and why winning is important to them and how it will effect them. The animations of facial expressions are unique to each character and the game has well developed AI that reacts to the different punches landed. But, and this is a big one, what's the point of the game? The sense of half-reality that is so important to most games is absent from this, and I don't see most of the gaming crowd actually going after this one at all. It's just hard to review a game that seems to have gotten everything right – like the graphics, the sounds and the stories, but somehow still misses the point! I mean you can be so focused on the trees that you miss the forest at times. Kinda like most of the “christians” today who do all the christian stuff but miss Christ. That's the condition of Black And Bruised. It seems to get things right, but fails to put them together properly. Play Black And Bruised if you're stuck on an island with nothing else to do…

Did you know - you can become a game tester and make $10-$70 per hour just testing games for major companies. You  also get to keep the games that you test. Here are the complete details.

The place where you can get the cheapest games is right here. There are no per-game fees and you can get as many as you want. Isn't that a deal!

Below are the cheats for Black And Bruised PS2. Even though I haven't been able to test all of the cheats mentionend below, I've been informed that all of these work just fine for Black And Bruised PS2.

CES 2010 proved to be worth the wait for Sony, who released their flip video camcorder trio, the Sony Bloggie. The Sony Bloggie represents the latest in HD video recording on a camcorder, with 1920 x 1080 resolution and a 360-degree rotating camera lens.

The Sony Bloggie project – three camcorders

Three models of the Bloggie are available, the MHS-CM5 for £147.50, MHS-PM5 for £149.99 and MHS-PM5K for £147.90. The difference between the three models is a 360-degree camera lens attachment which comes with the MHS-PM5K and both the PM5 models only allowing 4x digital zoom, compared to the CM5’s 5x optical zoom and 20x digital zoom.

Value for money

Photo: Sony

The Bloggie comes with built-in USB attachments allowing for the quick and easy attachment of the device to PC or other USB-enabled device. The recording device is also very flexible, with storage cards being compatible with both SD and Duo cards. Full HD video recording is available in both 1080p and 720p and five megapixel still images can be captured on the pocket camcorder. Still images taken in low light are however a challenge for the flip video camcorder, with grainy images being produced.

Tough and easy to use

All the action being recorded is viewed on the 2.4 inch LCD screen. The Sony pocket camcorder also comes with software uploaded, making video blogging a breeze thanks to the 270-degree swivel lens, not to be confused with the 360-degree lens attachment only available for the PM5K model and one touch button, for uploading videos to the Internet for viewing later on sites such as YouTube, Facebook or MySpace. The Bloggie, though wrapped in plastic, is firm and strong. It is, however, a bit difficult to handle and operate with one hand.

The downside

Photo: Sony

Though coming with a rechargeable and removable lithium ion battery, the power saving feature of the recording device is rather environmentally unfriendly. There is no power output for the flip video camcorder, meaning it has to be connected to a turned on and plugged in USB device to be able to fully charge. The already uploaded software is incompatible with 64-bit Windows. The camera is also missing a lot of things like a carry case, HDMI cable and is rather on the larger size compared to similar pocket camcorders.

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., March 8, 2010 – Canon U.S.A., Inc, a leader in digital imaging, today announced the launch of the REALiS SX7 Mark II Multimedia LCOS Projector. This new model combines the award-winning features of REALiS projectors with an impressive 4000 lumens of brightness and a Photo Image Mode to assist users with advanced color management and adjustments for ambient lighting conditions.

The Photo Image Mode allows users to easily make changes to improve the look and feel of the content being projected. Within this mode the Color Level and Color Temperature functions allow for fine-tuning of both the intensity of colors and the color temperature by selecting from easy-to-use presets. In addition, the Photo Image Mode includes an Ambient Light function which can be used to compensate for lighting conditions for both the type of lighting (Tungsten, Fluorescent and Fluorescent H) and intensity (Low, Medium or High). The ambient light function is ideal for users displaying content and cannot control the lighting conditions – such as educators speaking in classrooms or photographers showing their work in an art museum/gallery or at a seminar. The functions available in the Photo Image Mode allow users greater control of color reproduction and image quality.

“Whether presenting photographs, videos, presentations, or any other content, the color accuracy and amount of ambient light will play a major role in the perceived quality of work,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. “The high-brightness and Photo Image Mode included on the REALiS SX7 Mark II allows users to display their images with outstanding detail and superb quality.”

The REALiS SX7 Mark II Multimedia LCOS Projector features advanced LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) technology with Canon’s patented, proprietary AISYS (Aspectual Illumination System) Optical Engine. This advanced technology, combined with the projectors SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) native resolution and 4000 lumens of brightness, delivers extraordinary detailed, lattice-free motion and still images. This combination makes the REALiS SX7 Mark II ideal for classrooms, meeting/board rooms, photo studios and seminars/conferences.

The Canon REALiS SX7 Mark II Multimedia LCOS Projector supports Adobe RGB and sRGB color spaces. Both of these color spaces are of critical importance to professionals demanding precise color-matching in the following fields of work: professional photography, graphics, printing, computer aided design and medical imaging. Additional key features include:

• Genuine Canon 1.7x Powered Zoom/Focus Lens for ease of projector placement

• Supports popular widescreen WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution computers with no need for compression and/or unsightly distortion

• DVI-I Terminal ensures a true digital connection for high quality images and video

• Off & Go system allows the projector to be unplugged as soon as it is tuned off. This allows for quick and easy pack-up after a finishing a presentation.

Availability and Warranty Information

The REALiS SX7 Mark II Multimedia Projector has a suggested list price of $6,999 and is scheduled to be available in early April. This new model is backed by Canon USA’s Three-Year Limited Warranty and exclusive Projector Protection Program (“Triple P”). Triple P is a FREE service program that provides a loaner projector of equal or greater value in the event that a qualifying unit is in need of repair. Triple P is available on all Canon projector models during the Three-Year Canon USA Limited Warranty period.*
